For pretty
much his entire career, whenever he was in town,
Vance would sit in on studio sessions and
provide cover on live shows for other
drummers. One of his 'regular' calls was
with Pat Riordan.
During the last few years
of his career, he had to scale back the number
and frequency of jobs due to the progression of
a disease he was diagnosed with in the late
70s. Vance did not disclose the diagnosis
of Multiple Sclerosis with anyone outside of the
family until about 2010, when it became
impossible to hide the debilitating effects any
longer.
Vance was fortunate to
have a good friend - owner of the ROYAL
GEORGE HOTEL, Greg Pester -
who was able to support him in the final years
by providing a gig one night a week for their
jam sessions. Thanks to Greg, Vance
continued to play very casually when it got too
much for him to travel or move equipment.
Vance officially retired in
2016.
