Summer of 1977 … Vance was playing
with The Jim Kale Show and had just moved into
his first house. Burton was on the road
with a full slate of dates through to the fall,
promoting his second solo album, My Own Way
to Rock. His drummer, Jim Gordon,
left the band in the middle of the tour.
Burton's road manager couriered a tape to Vance,
and three days later, the remainder of the
backup band arrived in Winnipeg for a
rehearsal. The following day - July 22,
1977 - Vance was on stage with Burton in
Edmonton AB.
- Burton Cummings - vocals, piano
- Michael Rheault - keyboards, percussion, vocals
- Danny Weis - guitar, vocals
- Ian Gardiner - bass
- Vance Masters - drums, percussion, vocals
Burton
opened several dates that summer on Alice
Cooper's "King of the Silver Screen" tour in
both Canada and the USA. Alice's stage set
was designed as a giant TV, with a slit screen
allowing Cooper and his dancers to jump into and
out of it in choreographed sequences during
songs.
There was usually an "intermission" of about 45
minutes between Burton's set and Alice's show.
Alice's band for this tour:
- Alice Cooper - vocals
- Steve Hunter - guitar
- Dick Wagner - guitar
- Prakash John - bass
- Pentti "Whitey" Glan - drums
- Fred Mandel - keyboards
Vance
spent quite a bit of time with Whitey on the
Alice dates.
In the early 1980s, Vance's wife (Bev) worked at
a club in Winnipeg called Broadways. By
then, Danny Weis (Burton's guitar player) and
Prakash John (Alice's bass player) were in a
group called The Lincolns, based out of
Toronto. Vance reconnected with both Danny
and Prakash when The Lincolns played Broadways
February 8-13, 1982.
The links under Memorabilia show some photos
Vance took with an SX70 along with the pocket
litter that hitched a ride home in Vance's
luggage and drum cases from different cities
on the tour ... key tags, reviews, ads, stage
passes, programs, etc. Even some fake
"money" from Alice Cooper's set.
